The Disney History Institute is proud to announce an updated version of our first of our downloadable digital recreations – Project: Fairwinds.
Project: Fairwinds recreates a long-gone, centerpiece icon from Walt Disney’s efforts at the 1964-1965 World’s Fair in New York, the Tower of the Four Winds. Initially designed by Disney legend, Rolly Crump, the Tower of the Four Winds was a marquee sculpture designed as the visual marker for it’s a small world, a robust mobile that rose high above most of the Fair. Though the Tower of the Four Winds was dismantled over 50 years ago, through this 3D digital recreation, you can sample the wonder of Rolly Crump’s unique creation again.
This newest version of Project: Fair Winds include generous narration by Rolly Crump himself in which he explains his designs, his work with Walt, and the ultimate fate of the Tower. Along with the narration, look at photographic images from Bill Cotter’s immense collection of World’s Fair imagery, detailing the Tower from its construction to its demise.
So, take a stroll back to 1964, to the center point of world creative activity, the legendary New York World’s Fair. Move around the Tower in real time. Examine the spinning pinwheels and carousel cutouts, all of them true to Rolly Crump’s original designs. Project: Fairwinds is presently available for the Oculus Quest and Quest 2, with PC VR versions to come out over the next few weeks.
Come, take a step back in time!

Will this ever be available In the Oculus store? I haven’t enabled SideQuest yet.
So…there’s no way to view this on a computer…
Yup, releasing this as an .apk file is a great way to insure that nobody sees it, all right. I am always amazed at the tunnelvision of Android developers. However, if you take the trouble to install a program called “Bluestacks” (free – search for it on DuckDuckGo) your pc or other Windows device, you can open this file.
We should have a PC version out before Christmas.
The .apk file is linked by SideQuest. The APK is for Oculus Quest headsets and may not work correctly on any other Android device. We are looking at releasing an Android version that can run on a phone or tablet and make it available via the Google Play store.
I doubt this will ever be on the official store, but Oculus is looking at a secondary store for applications like this in Q1 next year. We are planning on utilizing this new path so that people do not have to setup SideQuest.
Now that in theory you can install sidequest apps from the headset, I just tried to install this on my Oculus 2. I downloaded the file but now I can’t find where it went or what to do with it. Anyone know how to get it to load from the headset without a PC? Thanks!
I’ve got a Valve Index and an Oculus 2. I was hoping this would show up either on Steam or the Oculus library, but it doesn’t seem to be available.
