From 1967 until 1985, guests at Disneyland had the opportunity to ”travel into the incredible universe found within a tiny fragment of a snowflake.” The attraction, Adventure Thru Inner Space, sought to use the tools of cinematic set design to explore the lessons of science, with massive structures representing water molecules and elaborate projection revealing the microscopic world of the atom. The ride was developed during Walt Disney’s final years, when he repeatedly explored how the tools of filmmaking might be repurposed to explore worlds beyond cinema in his theme park. Adventure Thru Inner Space was groundbreaking not only in introducing the Omnimover and by creating an attraction almost wholly focused on backgrounds (with no characters except for the onboard narration) but in the way it arranged dramatic, themed space toward educational goals.
Several years ago we released a beta version of this software; in recent months, we have worked to arrange an updated version worthy of a wide public release. The time for that release has come. Now you have the ability to experience this extinct Disneyland attraction on your PC monitor, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Oculus Quest. It may work on other headsets, but we could only test with what we have. If we hear they are working for some, we will update our release notes to make others aware. So join us as we journey back in time to look at–what was then imagined–as the future of science.

How about a google cardboard version? please oh please… for us poor folk.
When I try to run it (I have an HTC Vive, 64-bit Windows 10), I get a popup that DX11 feature level 10.0 is required to run the engine. I do have DX11.
Ah, ignore my previous comment. I had updated my video drivers yesterday and apparently that messed up my DX11 installation. I’ve reinstalled and it now works perfectly. Awesome!
So awesome. Brings back many great memories of the real thing! What tools did you use to build this? 3DS Max? Maya? Substance?
Oh man! My favorite ride (just nosing ahead of “Nature’s Wonderland”). I am unable to view this, so I hope hope hope that, as a Mac user, I will be able to enjoy it on some level, even if it’s not VR. Brandon Starr’s “Google cardboard” idea is a good one too!
It seems as if parts of it are not finished. does anyone know if there will be upgrades coming? Its great, but I think it could be truly Awesome with a little more refinement and maybe the ability to walk through the que and the models in the exit area!!
Does it work for Oculus Rift now? Are you done testing?
The stereoscopic rendering using SteamVR is broken and displaying improperly. I hope you are able to fix this. The project looks beautiful, and I would love to experience this ride that I was not around for at the time it was in operation. Thank you.
This is absolutely incredible. I’ve never been able to experience this in real life unfortunately, but with my Vive i feel like I have! Anyone know where/if there are more ride recreations like this?
Excellent work! My son and I “rode” it on my Oculus Rift last night. Man, does it bring back memories from childhood.
One of my favorite rides of all time! Scared the heck out of me as a kid!!
I’m excited about that ‘possible’ future MacOS, without VR version!
We hope to get it out soon. Because Unreal Engine now requires “Metal” GPU, what we currently have doesn’t allow up to build for it. Give us time!
We are working on more!
Hello,
I have recently acquired a prop from the ride. It is an Atommobile with two adults. It was displayed in one of the eight dioramas as you walked your way to board the Atommobiles and was located directly across from the Mighty Microscope and closest to the giant snowflake Miniaturization Control. The wording on this particular diorama box was “Molecule. Atom. Nucleus. Electron – Building blocks of our daily lives. Welcome to the world of inner space!” Plans are underway to recreate the box as true as possible plus we plan to add some choice clips of Paul Frees as well. Heck…it might even play ‘Miracles from Molecules’ so I can really drive my wife nuts! Many thanks to this site, Davelandblog, themightymicroscope.com, and Matterhorn1959 as without those pictures and videos we may have never been able to decipher exactly which display this was and where it was located in the ride. We’re still searching for possible blueprints or anything else that might help assist with this project. Thanks!
That sounds awesome! I’ve heard of a few of the models still being out there, and I’m glad to hear that they are being taken care of.
This was exactly how I remember the ride!!! What a blast it is to be able to actually re-live my childhood. Thank you sooo much!!!
I took the ride many times as a kid. This is is mind blowing on the Quest 2. Incredible recreation, down to watching the car in front of you turn. Can’t wait for more.
Just tried it out. Fantastic work! Kudos to all involved. That really brought back some memories, and I look forward to future projects!
Fantastic! Brought me right back to my childhood. Works great on the Quest 2. I’d love to see more of these!
I’m having a strange issue on the Quest 2 – no colors or textures will load. It’s black and white with no detail at all. There are reviews reporting the same issue in the Quest store from a year ago.
